What is Heritage Action?

Heritage Action is a rallying point for ordinary people who feel that society is sometimes deaf to the threats to prehistoric sites in Britain and Ireland. Neglect, vandalism, development, careless farming methods – all contribute to damage or loss, and all need highlighting at an early stage by members of the public

It is self-evident that the official agencies do not always provide adequate protection (and indeed it is impossible for them to do so in every case) so the eyes and ears – and voices - of the public can be an important part of the preservation process.

Consequently, our aim is to promote a wider appreciation of the value of these places, highlight threats to them, and encourage the public to become involved in responsible but vigorous action to preserve them.

If you would like to help – whether by telling us about a threatened site, contributing something of interest to the Journal or even becoming a Heritage Action member – please don’t hesitate to contact us.

We hold periodic Members’ meetings and also enjoyable summer “megameets” which are open to anyone interested in prehistoric sites where you would be sure of a warm welcome from many like-minded people.

The next open event will be a Megameet Picnic starting around midday on Saturday 1st August in the South East quadrant of Avebury.

Look out for our reminder nearer the time.
